Blam!

That was the sound of my head exploding.

According to an AC Nielsen Internet-based survey, 13% of Americans have never heard of global warming. Compare that to only 4% of Latin Americans, and 9% of people worldwide.

I--I can't--I can't even BEGIN to think of something to say that wouldn't get me arrested.

Apparently something like 2 in 5 Americans believe in global warming, according to a recent poll. However, 4 out of 5 Alaskans do, in comparison. The result of living somewhere that you see the results playing out every year of your life, it seems.

Well, that is one of the things the survey pointed up, that people living in areas that would be or already are dramatically affected by global warming are more likely to believe it.

Americans are willing to believe a lot of things they have no evidence for (religion, fad diets, Paris Hilton's interesting-ness), but when confronted with science, which provides ACTUAL EVIDENCE, they turn into complete skeptics.

(And no, I'm not equating religious beliefs with fad diets. But both are taken on faith, which Miracle on 34th Street famously defines as "believing when common sense tells you not to.")

That's because this country is unfortunately run by the oil companies and they have quite a few political leaders in their back pockets. They continuously propogandize against global warming.

Good point, Kathy, and it helps to explain the fuel (pardon the pun) for the disbelief, which people desperately cling to, because if what the oil companies say is true, it means we don't have to change. That's what we want to hear and believe.

But while it explains the greed and complacency, it doesn't explain the total ignorance. How could people--with Internet connections, no less, because it was an Internet survey--not even have heard of global warming?

And what exactly do you think people are using their Internet connections to learn? About Paris Hilton, no. ANNA NICOLE SMITH!
