Meadow hits middle age

(Sung to the tune of "In the Ghetto" by Elvis Presley):

On a hot and gray New Hampshire morn,
Another little baby puppy was born
In the kennel

(in the kennellllll)

And her owner sighed

'Cuz if there's one thing that he don't need
It's ten little worthless mouths to feed
In the kennel

(in the kennelllll)

Today Meadow turned seven, which makes her officially a senior dog. She celebrated by running in counterclockwise circles around the yard for no apparent reason, just like old times.

I can trace my dog's pedigree back 33 generations (36 on her mother's side), but I can only trace my own for four.

Moreover, on Greyhound-Data.com I found paintings of some of her oldest ancestors. Here's King Cob, born in 1838.

And here's one of Bedlamite, born in 1852. In color!!

(Click on either painting for larger versions.)

Sometimes when I look at Meadow's stats, I try to imagine her life at the kennel and at the tracks. Whether it was happy or not (and she shows no signs of ever having been unhappy), it was certainly not the innocent, carefree puppyhood and family life most dog breeds enjoy.

For the first two-and-a-half years, she had a job, one she apparently didn't do very well. Now her main responsibility is to keep the floors clean of toast crumbs, ice cream, and (sorry) hairballs. She also volunteers as rabbit muncher and couch warmer, though neither of these duties were in the original job description.

Mostly she just sits around looking cute:

Happy Birthday, Meadow!

Maybe she wasn't very good ar her old job, but she's tops at her current one, which includes tugging at heart strings. Happy Birthday, Meadow!

Awww! I really love greyhounds. They are such a sweet breed. I bet he lubs his mommy. I know I love my schnoodle despite the fact that he has a terrible nose (hide his bone and he can't find it.) But he can wag his docked tail like there's no tomorrow and he howls along with the town fire alarm like a gen-u-ine wolf.

Meadow's ancestors look so, so ....regal. My father always told me ethat the spelling of our surname indicated that we were descended from nobility. I later found out this was actually true. But somehow I suspect that, should I be able to unearth some paintings of my ancestors, they wouldn't look that good. I suspect we came from an "unacknowledged" branch of the family.

I didn't know they even *had* color paintings in 1852! Are you sure that one isn't colorized?

Happy birthday, Meadow!

Happy Birthday Meadow! Many more.

Blackjack's birthday was last week; he just turned two. He's officially not a puppy anymore, but he's emerged so much from his neglected previous life to finally act like a puppy. I'm so glad.

Happy Birthday to Blackjack! Wow, what a young'un.

Terri, yes, she lubs her mommy. But not in that needy, clingy, wait-for-me-outside-the-bathroom-door Labrador Retriever kind of way. I can only handle abject worship in small doses, i.e, foster pups.

Rob, what probably happened is that Bedlamite's portrait traveled back in time from the days of color paint.

Happy aniversary to your geyhound.
And speaking of pedigree, here is the history of pedigree which I wrote based on my own dogs' pedigree (and their ancesters):

Very cool. What a beautiful breed. I'm glad there are people making an effort to save rare dog breeds like this one. Good luck!
