Tidbit Tuesday #4 - book giveaways galore!

Last week I did almost nothing but write WVMP #4 (which I'm once again leaning toward naming Lust for Life). My goal was to reach 50K words before the Olympic cauldron was lit last Friday night, because I knew the Olympics would suck up a lot of my time.

I didn't quite make it (I never do--on the few occasions I actually reach a goal, I assume I haven't set it high enough), but I'm watching the Olympics, anyway. Just watched the USA men's and women's curling lose to Germany and Japan, respectively. I won't make the obvious World War II joke.

As the sports go down on TV, I'm attempting my own Olympian tasks:

1. Catch up on e-mail
2. Mail all ARCs, books, bookmarks, and bookplates I owe people
3. Put actual things on my Facebook fan page
4. Update my MySpace profile (or maybe just delete the thing--does anyone ever go there anymore?)
5. Get the Street Team stuff together
6. Read manuscript of a book I've been asked to blurb

And during the day, tackle a few of the 40 interviews and guest blogs I have lined up.

One of them is already done--yay! If you go read it over at Babbling About Books and More!, you can enter to win a signed copy of Wicked Game and Bad to the Bone.

Deadline: February 19

International entries eligible: Yes

Also, the awesome new blog For What It's Worth is continuing its charity auction for Haiti relief. This week you can bid to win signed a signed copy of Wicked Game and Bad to the Bone PLUS signed copies of Cynthia Eden's Eternal Hunter and Kresley Cole and Gena Showalter's Deep Kiss of Winter. Plus some nummy stuff you can eat and drink and a possible bonus book. All for such a good cause.

Deadline: February 21

International entries eligible: Yes

The Daily Dose blog ran a lovely Valentine's Day feature on the class of 2K10 and our thoughts on teen love. Sometimes it still feels like yesterday.

Are you following the Olympics? What's your favorite sport? Do you follow any of these sports outside of the Olympics? Is there a sport more mesmerizing than curling?

Tidbit Tuesday #1

Happy Tuesday, folks! I'm starting a new thing (and now that I've called it a "thing" I'll probably never do it again), Tidbit Tuesday (unless y'all prefer "Tuesday Tidbits" or something less cutesy like "Tuesday Trash," or more cutesy like "Tell-It-To-Ya Tuesday," or a Monday night feature called "'Til Tuesday"--hey, I like that one). I'll mention new book/music releases I'm excited about, plus news items I don't have time to elaborate on at the moment.

--First, the books! Two fellow Class of 2K10 members have their very first books out today and tomorrow (and another on Thursday, which I'll mention then). Today marks the release of Kitty Keswick's Freaksville. You can read more about it at her launch post, including a short interview with her brilliant editor at Leap Books.

Bonnie Doerr's debut, Island Sting, comes out tomorrow. I'm particularly excited about this because it features an environmental theme. I tried twice unsuccessfully to get a "green" novel published, so I'm cheering for this one to do well so we see more of them in the future. Also, she's a big fan of one of my favorite authors, Carl Hiaasen, so I know the book has to rock. There's a great interview with Bonnie over at Aurora's Reviews.

--Speaking of Class of 2K10, the Page Turners blog did a mini-interview with all of us, asking about our first lines, how and whether they changed from first draft to final.

--The last book I wanted to mention is actually a repackaging/re-release of three YA vampire novels, but it's very important for one reason. At the back of the second and final Christopher Pike Last Vampire compendium (Thirst #2) is...the first chapter of Shade!

Thirst #2 comes out today, but my copy arrived last Friday. Seeing Aura's words in bound printed form gave me the chills, and it wasn't just because I'd left the door open in my excitement to open the box. I'll probably wait until February to put the first chapter up on the website, so if you want to read Shade's first chapter, go check it out--the Pike books are excellent, too! Thirst #1 hit the New York Times bestseller list. If you haven't heard of The Last Vampire series, you're in for a real treat.

--I've started a new work plan for the new year. Yes, another Grand Masta plan that will make me more productive and happy! Here it is, simply put:

Instead of writing 2,000 words every day, including weekends, while trying to keep up with Stuff (blogging, e-mail, interviews, etc.), I'm going to start writing 3,000 words every weekday and take weekends off to catch up on Stuff and catch my breath.

This will allow me to have a more single-minded (some would say simple-minded) focus. Weekdays = writing; weekends (and some weekday evenings) = other. My brain likey!

So far so good after two days, but we'll see how it goes. Right now I'm off to play one of the two new Wii games we got for Christmas. After all, stress reduction is one of my goals for the New Year, and not making that goal will totally stress me out!

Yes, I'm certifiably insane.

Podcast with my agent & WVMP e-book updates

My awesome agent Ginger Clark of Curtis Brown, Ltd. just did a great podcast interview with Jon Armstrong of If You're Just Joining Us.

Aspiring writers, hark! The interview is a lot of fun and very enlightening. She discusses myths about agents (some of them aren't myths), the future of publishing (don't ask), her great Twitter conversion (yes, I told her so!), and how not to pursue an agent (hint: stay within the law and basic social codes).

I've also found the Sony eBook versions of my books, including the WVMP books, which as I mentioned last week, are also now available for the Kindle.

If you want the Adobe or Microsoft eReader versions, try Barnes & Noble or Fictionwise.

I've got some chunks of good news coming down the pike, including a big blog party next month. Stay tuned!

Two interviews & book giveaways

Quick post between vet visits (nothing serious, just routine checkups):

For the few people who are actually on the internet this close to the holiday weekend, your diligence is rewarded! I have two interviews up with two different signed books being given away.

Furthermore, I did not repeat myself ONCE between the two interviews. Although I may have used the word "and" in both.

Jocelynn Drake's giveaway of Wicked Game continues through tomorrow, and is now joined by a short interview about the WVMP series. Then Brooke Reviews has a longer interview where I discuss entirely different things, and where I'm giving away a signed copy of Bad to the Bone.

Yes, I forgot this was Labor Day weekend. I'm an idiot. But hey, those of you who actually check it out will have an even better chance than usual to win, because you won't have to compete with people who are out having fun.

Not that reading an interview with me isn't fun.

Anyway, have a great weekend, holiday or not!

Two interviews and book giveaways

I think as of this morning, I'm finally caught up on sleep! Yay! I need the brain clarity, since Bring on the Night is due in a week (technically next Saturday), and I have a lot of plot work to do. Little things, like what the hell does the villain want?

Also, for the first time I am finding it a major inconvenience that the vampires can't go out during the day. The timeline for Bring on the Night is so tight, and events happen so quickly, it's hard to wait for sunset to get stuff done. But I'll work it out eventually; somehow I always do. (Of course, with every book comes the fear that this time the plot will kick my ass instead of the other way around.)

Anyway, today two blogs are interviewing me (luckily with mostly different questions), and each of them are giving away a signed copy of any of my books. Winner gets to choose from my vast library of published work. (OK, maybe not that vast.)

At the first one, Smexy Books asks you to answer the question, "Kick Ass Chick or TSTL?" Since TSTL stands for Too Stupid to Live, it seems kinda like a "Cake or Death?" question to me. But whatever. Just go leave a comment to enter.

Then over at Star-Crossed Romance, you can find out Ciara's all-time favorite song (it might surprise you) and a little bit more about my YA series. Leave a comment to enter to win any of my books, signed and personalized by me!

I might drop in next week if I have any major news (well, I have major news, but I'm sort of saving it for an awards round-up post next month), but otherwise I'll be trying to finish Bring on the Night. Wish me luck and much caffeine!

Ciara & Shane interview--win a book, any book (of mine)

Ciara and Shane from Wicked Game and Bad to the Bone were interviewed over at Amberkatze's Book Blog, where Amber is generously giving away a copy of YOUR CHOICE of any of my books. I will send to the winner:

a) a signed bookplate--the next best thing to an autographed book
b) a signed coverflat of Bad to the Bone
c) a cool little metal bookmark engraved with a paw print and quote about dogs (or cats, if you prefer):

Because Bad to the Bone has animals and it's, you know, a book.

This is Shane and Ciara's first joint public appearance. The contest runs until July 3 (that's next Friday). Enjoy!

Signing tomorrow, book clubs, and Shane's Cat & Muse interview

Quick reminder: I'll be at Constellation Books at 303 Main Street in Reisterstown, Maryland, tomorrow 3-5pm. There'll be a reading, signing, discussion, and most important--cookies.

Last night I went to a book club meeting in Central PA where they were discussing Wicked Game. I had a ton of fun (and pizza)--it was great hearing everyone's thoughts on the characters. Really motivated me to keep writing!

If you have a book club in the mid-Atlantic area (within a reasonable drive of my house) and would like me to visit your book club, let me know. I'm also available to talk to book clubs over the phone (within the U.S.) or Skype (anywhere in the world).

As an aside, on the way up I heard The Killers' "Read My Mind," which is one of the first songs on the Wicked Game playlist. It made me "homesick" for the beginning of that book, when Shane and Ciara had just met. Things were so simple then. I'm working on Book 3 now, which takes place three years after their story began in Wicked Game. They're still together (and always will be), but their world has grown a lot more complicated. Such is the nature of a series where characters change and grow and make bargains with paranormal paramilitary organizations.

Anyway, there's a fun interview of Shane from the WVMP books over at Jackie Kessler's Cat and Muse blog. Our boy managed to keep out of the clutches of that former(ish) succubus Jezebel. A testament to his devotion to Ciara, or maybe Jez just isn't his type. He'll never tell.

Witchy Chicks guest blog & last BTTB giveaway (probably)

I'm guest-blogging over at Witchy Chicks today, about escapism in urban fantasy versus traditional fantasy, riffing off my world-building post from a few weeks ago.

Come comment to win a signed copy of that book that just came out. You know the one. (badtothebone) Even if you already have a copy, come comment so that my friends over there will think I'm cool.

Also, because I'm what in high school we used to call a dorkus maximus, I forgot to include the link to yesterday's Women Who Rock interview with Ciara. Ms. Griffin herself will be available to answer questions all week, and therein also lies a chance to win a signed copy of (badtothebone).

Hope to see you there, or at Balticon this weekend! If not, enjoy your long weekend (if you're American, and if not, enjoy your regular-size weekend).

Round 2 of Ciara & Dante interview - win an ARC of BAD TO THE BONE!

Ciara (from Wicked Game and the forthcoming Bad to the Bone) continues her interview of and by Dante from Adrian Phoenix's A Rush of Wings and In the Blood. You can read the interview on Dante's blog, then ask a question or make a comment AT THE INTERVIEW POST to enter to win an Advance Review Copy of Bad to the Bone (coming May 19, did I mention that?)

Read Round One to refresh your memory if you like.

I'm off to finish a novel now, and on Monday I hope to be able to tell you what it is I've been working on these last two months, the main reason I've been blogging so little (the ancillary reason is that my computer is so slow these days that it takes--I am not kidding--about an hour to do one blog post, not including the typing).

Everything I needed to know about love I (shouldn't have) learned from ALL MY CHILDREN

It's Valentine's Day here in Hallmarkistan, which means authors (especially those of us who write about The Love Thang) are being asked all sorts of broad questions about romance.

Book Spot Central invited me and several other science ficiton/fantasy authors to tell them which movies/TV shows/books had the most influence on me as a viewer/reader? At first I thought that meant, "Which were your favorite?" But I'm glad I didn't answer it that way*, because I would've given the same response as Paul Malmont (Groundhog Day) or Carrie Vaughn (The Princess Bride).

Instead, I answered the question literally and honestly. Read our responses (I'm fourth from the bottom, right above my favorite answer by my friend Dave Williams). And try to have a good Valentine's Day.

*even though in the final blog post it's written as "favorites" not "most influential." Maybe this is what Sarah Palin meant by "gotcha journalism". ;-)

Wicked Game podcast reading

Last year at Balticon I read several excerpts from Wicked Game, and it turns out they were recording it! (Actually, I knew, and had to sign a waiver thingie, but then promptly forgot.) You can hear a lot more than just the first-chapter excerpt on my website.

It was probably my best reading ever--not because of me, but because of the audience. It was a full room, and everyone was really into it, offering supportive smiles and not falling asleep. Anyone who's ever been onstage knows how much the audience energy contributes to a performance.

In this podcast, guest host and radio personality Jon "The Vicar" Stallard (host of Geek Radio Daily) gives what is probably the best summary of the book I've ever heard.

Check it out, and check out their other podcasts, which are some of the most professional productions I've ever heard. And if in you're in the Baltimore/DC area Memorial Day weekend, come to Balticon. You won't regret it!

Happy New Year!

Welcome back, all you lazy sods relaxed folk who took off the entire holiday season. Here's what you've almost missed:

My latest Aspect of Crow tie-in short story is now live in its entirety! All eight weekly chapters are posted on my publisher's site, so grab a cup of cocoa and read all of "Storm Reaper" at once.

- The first in a series of booze-soaked mutual interviews between Dante Baptiste and Ciara Griffin, along with a chance to win a signed copy of Adrian Phoenix's fabulous new release, In the Blood (and possibly an Amazon gift certificate, too!) You can read my review and find out more about the subsequent giveaways in the previous post.

- On Friday, Justin Gustainis gave us an entertaining look at The Future of Urban Fantasy. Comment on his post and enter to win his newest Quincey Morris Supernatural Investigations release, Evil Ways.

Now, for my 2009 goals. They're pretty much a knockoff of my 2008 goals, which I reviewed last week. The only difference is they're a little bit more attainable.

1. Write and rewrite Book One in YA series.
1a. If YA Book One sells, write first draft of Book Two (maybe as NaNoWriMo project)
2. If publisher buys more vampire books, write and rewrite Book Three.
3. Write at least 10K words of vampire Book Four (contingent on #2).
3a. If publisher doesn't buy more vampire books, write proposal for new series.
4. Write three more tie-in stories for Wicked Game (Noah, Regina, Shane)
5. Write 1000 words/week on new adult urban fantasy novel/series (unless #3a comes to pass, in which case, faster!)
6. Brainstorm with potential collaborator (you know who you are) about that paranormal romantic comedy
7. Blog at least once every other week on WVMPradio.com (or replace the blog with something better, like...I don't know. Suggestions, anyone?)
8. Have Ciara and Shane blog at least once every other week on their MySpaces
9. Start Twitter account for Ciara
10. Start Facebook fan page and Ning social networking site (only if I can get someone else--maybe a couple of Street Team members?--to maintain them)
11. Attend 5 conferences/conventions/book festivals and 5 non-conference appearances (signings, talks)
12. Sign stock at 25 bookstores
13. Do 20 online interviews/guest blogs
14. Read 50 books
15. Watch 50 movies
16. Foster 2 cats (not at the same time)

Overall, more writing and less not-writing, which makes everyone happier. And of course, much of 7-10 depends on #2 coming to pass. Hopefully I'll know about that in the next couple of months, and I'll shout it from the virtual rooftops if it happens.

What are your goals for this year? Are they like mine, simply tweaks and updates from last year, or are you doing a major overhaul of priorities? How do you measure your progress? Do you see goals as a chance to stretch yourself, or as a way to set yourself up for failure? Or both?

Have a great 2009! I'll see you back here next year! (Just kidding. I think I'll be back tomorrow with another guest, but I have to check with them.)

Dante & Ciara Interview Part One

Since Dante Baptiste (of Adrian Phoenix’s A Rush of Wings and In the Blood) and Ciara Griffin (of Jeri Smith-Ready’s Wicked Game and the upcoming Bad to the Bone) are from two different worlds, it seemed likely (and sad) that they’d never meet.

But then the dimensional fabric between their worlds thinned for a brief time, so that they could share a few (okay, make that a lot of) drinks at the Bar Between the Universes (not to be confused with the Restaurant at the End of the Universe—the Bar only serves basic pub grub) and got to talking:

ROUND ONE (see yesterday's blog for an explanation of rounds)

Dante (drinking Absinthe King Gold): Hey Ciara, bon soir. We’re the only ones in the club, and I’m content to play bartender. Name your poison.

Ciara: Hmm, given your choice of words, I’ll take a Coke. In the original container. Unbroken seal.

Dante: (snorts) So you’re saying that the drink used world-round to clean car batteries is safer than anything I’d pour for you? Oh-kay. (Hands Ciara an ice-cold short bottle of Coke. Unopened. Offers her a bottle opener.)

Ciara: Hey, I’m new in your world. Lots of scary-ass folks, including nightkind. Always gotta watch out for numero uno, right? Trust no one. Well, almost no one.

Dante: C’est vrai, but you gotta trust yourself, yeah? It gets old always watching out for Numero Uno. You never know when he’s gonna blindside you with a flying tackle. I ain’t trying to be cold, but I think it’s time Numero Uno was told he ain’t with the Saints no more. D’ya think there’s an assisted living center for delusional ex-football players?

Ciara: (blinks)

Dante: Oh. Wait. You meant numero uno as in (points a finger at Ciara’s chest, then points at his own). Gotcha! See, there’s this . . . never mind, ain’t important. (Downs his drink)

So I read Wicked Game.

Ciara: And you told all your friends, right? Maybe talked about it onstage? Been my ever-lovin’ pimpalicious baby?

Dante: (pouring himself another tumbler of Absinthe King Gold) Oui, I told all my friends about WVMP and its vampire DJs, and I think I mentioned you. And Shane. And all the hot sex.

(A smile tilts his lips)

I even told them there was another book on the way full of action, hysterical one-liners, deadly fanatics, and – oh, yeah – more hot sex. I ain’t mentioned it onstage, but where do I sign up to be your ever-lovin’ pimpalicious baby? What are the perks?

Ciara: Gold chain medallions, ankle-length leather coat with arctic fox trim. The standard pimp accoutrements. I think you’d look cute in one of those big purple hats.

Dante: (chokes on his drink. Turns around so Ciara can lean across the bar and pound on his back as he gasps for air.)

Ciara: Anyway, I’ve read both of your adventures, A Rush of Wings and In the Blood, which puts me one ahead of you. I’ve even read the sections you didn’t narrate, which means I know seeeeeecrets. Which I’m willing to sell.

Dante: Secrets? To sell? How much? (works hand into pocket of leather pants, then his gaze lights on the cash register. He grins and pulls his hand free of his pocket.)

Ciara: Actually, I’m not sure I want to be around when you find out some of those not-so-fun facts. Maybe I could mail them to you and you could wire the money to one of my offshore accounts. After I’m far, far away. Out of “unmaking range.”

Dante: (blinks) Offshore accounts? What, are you Le Chiffre from Bond? Does that make me Bond or the Bond chick? And I ain’t one of those ‘unmake the messenger’ types, p’tite.

Ciara: That’s good to know. So where was I? Oh yeah, your books. I tell all my friends about your antics, and once I have some free time in between all the not-getting-killed, your stories will be the first ones I review on our dormant website. Because they officially rock.

Do people still say things “rock”? Sometimes I worry I spend so much time with Nineties Boy, my slang gets out of date.

Sorry. You were saying. Or maybe I was saying. Who was saying?

Dante: (reaches over and yanks the bottle of Coke out of Ciara’s hand.) You’ve had waaaay too much caffeine, p’tite. Choose a non-caffeinated drink.

Ciara: (sighs) Okay. Give me a Smithwick’s. That’s Shane’s favorite beer. But again, sealed, please.

And when you get a chance, come sit with me. You hovering behind the bar feels too much like a shrink with his patient. Unless you feel threatened, in which case, hover all you want. I know better than to threaten a vampire.

Dante: (snorts) Threatened. (Moves in a blur of latex and gleaming steel and sits on the stool beside Ciara, unopened bottle of Smithwick’s in hand, which he extends to her.) You still have the bottle opener, yeah?

Ciara: (gapes) Uh…yeah. (presses cold bottle against neck to cool off)

Dante: I’m impressed by how you’ve been able to play the book off as fiction, but given your skills in the persuasive arts, not surprised. You got any other promotions for WVMP coming up?

Ciara: (recovers at the mention of marketing activities) You bet! We had a rockin’ Halloween party, and then a Happy Hell-iday celebration for Christmas. Eight fanged reindeer pulling Santa’s coffin, devil horns on my elf costume, and of course, the classic holiday songs like “Little St. Nick” by the Beach Boys, and “Christmas Sucks” by Tom Waits and Peter Murphy.

(pops top of beer bottle)

See, some annoying people insisted we were going to hell, so we decided to milk it. Ratings, you know. You can read all about it in my next adventure, BAD TO THE BONE, coming out in May, in stores everywhere!

(looks around for someone to hand a bookmark to, sees no one, is deflated)

Dante: Leave some bookmarks on the bar, I’m sure people will pick ‘em up. I’d like one, too.

Ciara: So what about you? How’s the Inferno tour going? Any more onstage, um, episodes like the one in Seattle that Heather told us about in IN THE BLOOD? That looked pretty rough. I’m not surprised people thought it was a stunt. Tabloid rumors really sell concert tickets! But seriously, I hope you’re feeling better.

(reaches out to pat his shoulder, thinks better of it)

Dante: People thought what happened on stage was a stunt? Wow. I didn’t know that. Tabloid rumors . . . hell, I didn’t even think about that! I don’t even remember what happened, to be honest. But I’m good, merci beaucoup for asking.

Ciara: Good. I want to keep you around for those next two books I hear are coming down the pike. You know anything about them? Any hints for your cutest fan? (bats eyelashes)

Dante: Shane’s here?? Oh. You meant cutest female fan. (Wicked smile.) Umm . . . well, the title is BENEATH THE SKIN. And the series now has a name – THE MAKER’S SONG. I can’t really give you any hints because it might spoil ITB for those who ain’t read it yet. I can say there’ll be fights for survival, sex, love, blood, oh, and a fight for sanity. I know . . . generic. (Shrugs.) Can’t be helped, p’tite.

Ciara: Ooh, your series has a name. I’m jealous. But congratulations—it all sounds very intriguing.

Dante: Your turn. List the DJs in order of hotness. I think it’s a given Shane’ll be numero un. Gotta admit, I think he’s hot too.

Ciara: Why, thank you. In order? Definitely Noah is second—he’s got a kind, gentle soul, and the dreadlocks are a work of art. I also like that he sometimes wears glasses, though of course he doesn’t need them.

Dante: Dreads are smokin’ for true.

Ciara: Then probably a tie between Spencer and Monroe. They’re both so aloof and magnetic, although Spencer, frankly, is a major tightass. But he has piercing eyes, so point in his favor.

Dante: Oui, I’d say piercing eyes earns points, tightass loses points, so maybe Spencer’s a wash, yeah?

Ciara: Overall, yeah, but he’s good to have around. At least the sanest patient is running the asylum.

Back to the hotness rankings. Last would be Regina and finally Jim. Not that they’re not gorgeous, but their personalities are kind of a turnoff. Regina’s a bully, and Jim…well, I wouldn’t give him the satisfaction. He’s definitely committed “bad touch” with me more than once. I’d give anything to be able to haul off and whack him upside the head, but that’d probably get me killed.

Shane put him in his place, though, in BTTB. He totally drank his milkshake. Well, he took a sip, at least.

Am I talking too much? Do I seem nervous? Don’t answer that.

Dante: I never really got that “I drink your milkshake” line in that “There Will Be Blood” movie. I mean, what the hell was that movie even about? Um…excuse that digression.

(C&D speak over each other)

Ciara: I didn’t actually see it--I spent most of that December trying not to get killed. But these days, the catch phrase is enough to fake one’s pop culture awareness.

Dante: You seem a little nervous, yeah. But I ain’t gonna do any “bad touch” stuff or let anyone else bother you – if anyone should walk in, that is, which they won’t. Club’s closed. Just you and me, chere. Whoops. I wasn’t supposed to answer that, yeah?

Ciara: Answer what? Huh?

Dante: (pours fourth Absinthe King Gold and waits for her to catch up)

Ciara: Anyway, instead, answer this: What’s your favorite song you’d never cover onstage? A secret guilty pleasure, like REO Speedwagon or Barry Manilow, perhaps?

Dante: My secret guilty pleasure--but it ain’t secret anymore--is Justin Timberlake. I’d love to do a cover of “Cry Me a River” that song’s just brimming with rage, but the guys would probably tie me up and stuff me head first into a laundry hamper full of smelly athletic gear. My other secret--dammit…not anymore!--guilty pleasure would be Kelly Clarkson’s “Addicted.” That song cuts to the core. But…the guys would probably tie me up, stuff me into a laundry hamper, etc.

You next. What song or band is your secret guilty pleasure?

Ciara: Does Coldplay count? I’m told they’re not cool, but they’re my musical Valium. Except for their new album, which I hate. Now that they’ve been praised for reinventing themselves, they’ll do it every time, and I’ll never get my mindless soothing Brit Pop melodies back. Ah well. There’s always Snow Patrol.

Dante: Oui, Coldplay counts. The reinvented Coldplay is too generic to be worthy of secret guilty pleasuredom. (Clinks his tumbler against Ciara’s beer bottle). Hey! While we’re starting to feel no pain, it’s the perfect time to indulge our secret guilty pleasures, yeah?

(Dante jumps to his feet, blurs back behind the bar, much clinking, clanking, and muttering ensues. He straightens, shaking his hair back from his face, a triumphant smile on his lips. He thumps a karaoke machine on the bar.)

Le voici! Ain’t never done this, but I think it’d be fun, yeah? Just you and me and any song we’d never sing in front of an audience. I can set this up, we can take turns singing in the Cage or on the bar! I totally want to sing “Like a Virgin!” Whatcha wanna sing? We can flip a coin or arm wrestle or kiss or something to decide who goes first!

Ciara: Ooh, I know—let’s start with a duet! Like maybe… (flips through karaoke book) Perfect! (programs machine and hands Dante a mic) First one to laugh has to sing anything the other one chooses.

Dante: D’accord. And drink anything the other one pours.

(We hear the opening strains of the world’s tenth cheesiest vampire song: Ozzy Osbourne and Lena Horne’s “Close My Eyes Forever.” Fade out as Dante snarfs absinthe out his nose.)

To be continued next month...

---

Um...yeah. Anyway, leave a comment or a question for Ciara and/or Dante between now and 11:59pm EST next Wednesday (January 7) to be automatically entered to win an autographed copy of In the Blood.

And since I'm still skeptical about the level of people's internet engagement over the holidays, I'll throw in a $10 Amazon gift certificate if we reach 50 comments, so you can buy another copy of ITB for a friend. That way you won't have to lend it out and get it back with coffee stains and cat-chewed cover corners.

If you don't have a Blogger account, no worries! Just sign your name and be sure to either check back next week to see if you won, or leave a way to get in touch with you (leaving an e-mail in the address not recommended, due to spam issues).

Get an extra chance to win by friending Ciara or Dante on MySpace. Be sure to let them know you're entering the contest and what name you've commented under, so I know which commenter to assign the extra chances to. Clear as mud?

Happy New Year!

Blog Talk Radio group interview, guest blog, and Meadow update

Here's the link for the audio for yesterday's Blog Talk Radio interview, focusing on world-building (I'd hoped to have the embedded audio, but it's not working for me, so just follow the link if you wanna listen).

Also, today I've got blog duty at SFNovelists.com, where I bring up the question of not just where but when to set one's novel--specifically around holidays or certain times of the year?

Our greyhound Meadow just went into surgery to fix four ruptured discs in her back. We tried the "conservative" method, i.e., crate rest and pain meds, to no avail, so this was our last option. Her road to wellness will be a long one (6-8 weeks, maybe more), but the doc seemed optimistic about her chances for a full recovery. Not sure if we'll ever let her run again, and she's definitely hanging up her WWE title belt (do they wear belts?), but we'll be thrilled just to be able to take her for a walk without painful consequences.

Keep your fingers crossed for her!

Reminder and update on BTTB contest and interview

You've got three hours left to enter the drawing to win a choice of Wicked Game or an ARC of Bad to the Bone over at Bitten by Books. Also, people have been asking some great questions, so if you've only read the interview itself and want to know even more of my deepest secrets, check out the comments.

Good luck!

Interview and your first chance to win an ARC of BAD TO THE BONE!

More big news on a Monday (scroll down for the other thing):

Bitten by Books has a brand-new interview with yours truly. One lucky commenter will win their choice of an autographed copy of Wicked Game or an autographed Advance Reading Copy of Bad to the Bone when it becomes available (probably January or early February). This is the very first opportunity to win the latter, so go read my sleep-deprived thoughts and leave a comment. Get extra chances to win by spreading the word (see the bottom of the interview post for details).

Thanks to Rachel at Bitten by Books for the interview! Comments will be taken from now until 3pm Eastern Time tomorrow. I'll be stopping by all day today and tomorrow morning, so feel free to ask more questions. See you there!

Two chances to win the entire Aspect of Crow trilogy!

It's in! I finally finished polishing Bad to the Bone and sent it off last night. Which frees me up to tell you about two fantastic chances for you to win a complete set of Aspect of Crow books.

I have a fun new interview at Amberkatze's Book Blog. Amber wants you to take my Animal Spirit personality quiz and leave your results in the comments of the interview post. She'll draw a name on Sunday to win a signed trilogy coming directly from me (US residents only--sorry, it costs a bundle to mail three big books).

Amber gave the series awesome reviews here (Eyes of Crow), here (Voice of Crow), and here (The Reawakened).

Also, author Ann Aguirre is lucky enough to be on a sun-drenched vacation in Mexico (as opposed to her sun-drenched everyday life in Mexico). While she's gone, she's left a post offering an Aspect of Crow trilogy, courtesy of her, to one lucky commenter. Of course, I'll send autographed bookplates to the winner. This contest is open to anyone anywhere (because bookplates are cheap to mail)!

Now I have to go clean my house and catch up on approximately 3,478 e-mails. And eventually shower.

New Interview and Wicked Game giveaway!

You thought the Wicked Game Blog Tour was over? Ha! After twenty-some stops, it's just getting started.

Actually, it is almost over. Soon you'll have to give up on getting a free copy and go buy your own.

But not today! Patricia's Vampire Notes is posting an interview with me, and a name will be randomly drawn from comments today through tomorrow night to win a signed copy of Wicked Game.

Patricia reviewed Wicked Game for Library Journal in May, saying that "A colorful premise and engaging characters make the author's latest a fun read."

I'll be sitting close by throughout the day to answer any questions or comments, so it'll be almost like a chat. In the same way that telegrams are almost like phone calls.

NOTE: to enter, you must make your comments at the interview post, not here, because Patricia will be doing the drawing. Also, you can get extra entries by asking me a question or linking to the interview from your own blog, and possibly by standing on your head while reciting the preamble to the Constitution, but I could be wrong.

ANOTHER NOTE: You have until 11:59 tonight to enter the contest for an ARC of The Reawakened, the last installment of my Aspect of Crow trilogy.

Eclectic Review pods again

Stuart and Glory Jaffe's Eclectic Review discussed Wicked Game again, even more in depth than in last month's episode. This time it was in the context of recycled art and how the novel puts unique twists on the old vampire conventions.

Stuart also remarks on the unobtrusive use of first person present tense (something that usually annoys him) and how he didn't even notice it until a third of the way through. I discussed my choice to use that technique in my answer to the first question in the Fangs Fur & Fey interview, if you're interested.

Speaking of which, I'm posting over there today on the Topic of the Week (today's is pen names), because that's how I deal with Mondays.

Fast Forward TV interview

Back in May I was privileged to be interviewed by Mike Zipser of Fast Forward TV, a monthly half-hour TV series on science fiction and fantasy. It was on the air the in DC area during July, but thanks to the internet, you can view it at your leisure (like, now, for instance!).

It was a huge pleasure to do the interview. Mike was a fantastic host who asked fun questions (which I didn't have access to ahead of time), and it was over before I knew it.

Like that podcast with Jon Armstrong, I haven't watched this yet. I find it too nerve-wracking. So let me know how it is, and whether I should wear my hair back next time.

New interviews and quintupled Wicked Game giveaway

My Conestoga update will have to wait for tomorrow, as I need to finish my proposal today to stay on schedule. Plus I have a ton of e-mail/MySpace/Facebook messages to catch up on--a never-ending battle. So I need to spend my online time today carefully.

So the stuff:

Fellow author Jon Armstrong interviewed me for his podcast, "If You're Just Joining Us." I haven't listened to it yet, because we did the interview in the morning, when I'm not at my best. So if someone out there would listen to it and report back as to whether I said anything grossly stupid or offensive, that'd be swell.

Also, CK2S Kwips & Kritiques posted their interview with me yesterday. In it I discuss both series of books, what it's like to foster dogs, and discuss a tiny bit about Wicked Game's sequel, Bad to the Bone. Check out Kelley's and Debbie's sweet reviews of Wicked Game while you're there.

Renowned tabloid National Examiner is giving away 5 copies of Wicked Game in their "Fantastic" summer giveaway. If you get a chance to pick up a copy, check out page 46 of the July 28 issue (click for larger image):

So if you're wondering how I got a free ad in a magazine with a circulation of 420,000, it happened this way: Pocket sent the Examiner a review copy of Wicked Game, and I guess someone there liked it (described it in the ad as a "delightful comedy") and asked if they could do a giveaway.

Not bad, eh? And in this issue, the ad faces an exciting article about the pyramid-shaped "Car of the Future," an eco-friendly machine that uses NO gas, is bulletproof, and hits 200 mph.

There are no airbags as the nose cone and interior of the eco-friendly car is lined with a 3-inch-thick layer of bubble wrap.

Get yours today.

Conestoga brief and contest updates

I'll post my Conestoga rundown tomorrow--I'm running behind right now due to United Airlines having stolen a day of my life.

EDITED TO ADD: Read others' accounts of Conestoga here on the Fangs Fur & Fey debriefing post.

All I can say is that it was fabulous, one of my all-time favorite convention/conference experiences. I had a chance to talk at length with a lot of people I'd only met briefly at more hectic conferences like RT, or had met only online. The convention was tons of fun, without leaving me feeling like I'd been hit by a cement truck.

The trip there and back, on the other hand?

Let's see, from the time I left my house until I got to my hotel room Thursday: 17 hours.

On the way home? 26 hours.

I'm once again thinking of giving up air travel.

Two contest updates:

The winner of a copy of Nancy Hunter's Taste of Liberty is Jamie! Thanks to everyone who commented on the interview last week, and especially thanks to Nancy for stopping by. Jamie, please get in touch with me at jeri AT jerismithready DOT com to claim your fabulous prize.

Also, there's one day left to win a signed copy of Wicked Game on Sidhe Vicious's blog, where she interviewed me earlier this month.

Now. Must shower. Brush teeth. Buy groceries. All the things I couldn't do while standing in line at Customer Service. (Fortunately, I am part English, so standing patiently in line is in my blood.)

Join me on the Desert Island

I'm the leadoff guest author over at the hottest new blog for readers, Desert Island Keepers. I'm giving away a signed copy of Wicked Game (or another book if you already have that one) to one person who leaves a comment on either today's or tomorrow's post.

Today I'm introducing myself by running the gauntlet of "About Me" questions the DIK ladies (hee) all succumb to. Find out my favorite love (and sex) songs, which hero I would be (hint: he has a butler and a lot of cool toys), and which series I would live in (other than the fantasy that is my real life).

Monroe's story will be up later today/tonight. I'll post when it goes live!

Holy Jinks, another interview!

Damn the paparazzi--they've cornered me again and forced me to talk about myself and my new book. We all know how I hate that.

Today's stop on the Blog Whore Tour is an interview with Love Romances, who gave Wicked Game a sweet review a couple weeks ago. Come find out why I can't write like Margaret Atwood and whether Ben or Matt would make a better Messiah.

Thanks very much to Dawn for having me over to the site!

No. I mean, damn her for getting me to talk.

Again.

About my new book.

Brain-dead but breathing

Recovering from another exhausting but awesome Balticon. No complete sentences today.

Instead:

— A brand-new Music of Wicked Game page here at jerismithready.com--now with more playlist-y goodness! Not only the 'soundtrack,' but also the popular songs that make up the chapter titles. And a link to the DJs playlists, and some Pandora stations, too. Go listen now!

Guest blogging about the Wicked Game soundtrack at the Parkersburg (WV) News-Sentinel, which reviewed the book earlier this month.

— Interviews with me at the blogs of authors Val Griswold-Ford and Maria V. Snyder. Giveaway of Wicked Game at the latter (contest entry for MySpace folks only--sorry!--but anyone can read it).

— Coming up: an interview with Kelly McCullogh, whose third book in a science fiction thriller series, Codespell, is being released today.

There. No complete sentences. Harder than it looks.

New interview and Wicked Game giveaway!

Up-and-coming superstar author Stephanie Kuehnert interviewed me about Wicked Game. Since her own interests (and forthcoming YA novel I Wanna Be Your Joey Ramone) center around music, most of the questions focus on the rock 'n' roll aspects of the book.

Come and leave a comment, ask a question, or tell us how music has inspired you or your creativity. One lucky commenter (from a pool of commenters on the Blogger, MySpace and LiveJournal versions of the interview) will win a signed copy of Wicked Game! You have until 5PM Eastern time on Thursday to enter.

Also, I did an hour-long interview on Blog Talk Radio yesterday, on the Romance with Regan show. Regan Taylor was a fantastic host, and I look forward to coming back in November before the release of The Reawakened. Hmm, that book really needs its own page on my website. No cover yet, but the back cover copy is ready, and soon there'll be an excerpt.

Speaking of TR, line edits are due Friday. Gotta run!

Blog Whore!

I mean, Blog Tour. If you're not already sick of reading my inane babblings, here are three more opportunities to have your brain cells coated with my thoughts (I recommend a nice vinegar rinse afterward). One of them has something in it for you.

Interview at Ann Aguirre's blog. Find out my secret celebrity boyfriend, my favorite drink, and whether a dolphin could take on a ninja. Or a pirate, I forget. Anyway, one lucky commenter will win a signed copy of Wicked Game.

Interview at Fangs, Fur & Fey. Rachel Vincent asks about my favorite scene from Wicked Game, how I researched the book, and why the hell I chose to write in first person present tense.

Big Idea at John Scalzi's Whatever blog. This is one of my favorite blogs going way back, so I'm tickled and terrified at being featured on it myself. The Big Idea is--well, just go look. It's pretty short.

Thanks to Ann, Rachel, and John for picking my brain!

Blog tour and erratum

There'll be a big sniffly Release Day post coming up after sunrise, but I wanted to cover some other important stuff.

First, the heroine of Wicked Game, Ciara Griffin, had a very special interview with Jezebel, the (ex-)demon star of Jackie Kessler's fabulous HELL ON EARTH urban fantasy series. Ciara was astonishingly frank about her job and her sex life. So check it out if you want the dirt about her and Shane and WVMP. Some of it might even be true.

Also, I posted my answers to the first slew of questions over at Fallen Angel Reviews. You have until noon to ask me a question, and then we'll be drawing a name to win a signed copy of Wicked Game. I'll answer the second batch of questions at that time. I'm getting some fascinating ones, so go check it out!

Finally, I must hang my head in shame. In yesterday's post about almost turning into Runway Pancake, I accused FTD of not delivering my mom's Mother's Day flowers. Heh. It turns out, they didn't deliver the flowers because I told them to send them this Friday instead of last Friday. D'oh! So mea culpa, Mom, and sorry, FTD. You're as awesome as always, and I'm as braindead as ever.

It's Podcast-ic!

Happy Mother's Day, everyone (or at least, you know, mothers)!

I had a great time at Mysterious Galaxy's 15th Birthday Bash yesterday. Tomorrow I'll post more about it (including actual pictures, including one of giant monkeys).

Today I wanted to tell you about two interviews available online for your listening pleasure:

My friend Rob Usdin at Jersey Jamcast hooked me up with two wonderful podcasters. The first was Brian Noe of Studio C. Last week I had my very first phone-in (or Skype-in, technically) interview.

Here's a shot of me during the interview, thinking of wise and witty words. By the wet hair and lack of makeup, you can tell it was NOT my idea to have my picture taken. But at least I changed out of my jammies for the occasion.

One thing I like about the interview is that two of the tracks that I couldn't get for my playlist ("I'll Never Get Out of These Blues Alive" by John Lee Hooker and "Ciara" by Luka Bloom) made it onto the podcast, at least briefly.

Then later that week I did an interview with Zack "The Mothman" Daggy for his Shameless Plugcast. I really enjoyed this one as well. Zack told the world that if you love the humor and drama of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, you'll love my book. And that as a DJ, he really sympathized with the characters in Wicked Game.

I love their theme song. It's now stuck in my head ("Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeaaaaahhhh....")

NOTE: you don't need an iPod to listen to a podcast. You just need one of those thingies, what do you call them? Computers! That's it.

I'm now going to avail myself of the free continental breakfast. Such as it is.

Interview at Darque Reviews

My Blog Tour continues today, with an interview at Darque Reviews.

Find out which character I'm most attached to, why I hate first drafts, and how much potential I have for becoming a crack addict.

----

Beginning now, I'm taking a long weekend off to do some intensive work on Bad to the Bone. I'll fill in plot holes, untangle storylines, and oh, I don't know, maybe finally figure out what happens in the last chapter. And whatever happened to the disappearing journalist. And that other guy.

May your weekends be full of fun!

I'm kicking off my Blog Tour with an interview at ChickLitGurrl's blog. Find out how I got the idea for Wicked Game, which three songs would be on the soundtrack to my life, and my single biggest piece of advice for writers.

Excuse me while I go follow that advice....

The winnahs keep comin' -- Be one today!

The winner of last week's drawing for an ARC of Wicked Game was Crystal from MySpace. Yay, Crystal!

This week's contest is so easy it makes me want to weep and take a shower. On December 26, my Pick Six interview appeared on author Heidi Ruby Miller's blog. (It's called Pick Six because she gives authors 15 questions and we answer 6.)

So be a bud, go to Heidi's blog, and comment on my interview. It's the least I can do since she was nice enough to give me a little exposure. Plus, she'll be totally weirded out by the sudden influx of comments.

***NOTE: if you can't post a comment there because you don't have a Live Journal account (I think you might be able to do it anonymously and just sign your name so I know who you are), then just post your comment here. Sorry for the inconvenience.***

I'll draw one ARC winner from the commenters, and I swear I won't give extra weight to those who say something along the lines of, "Jeri, how'd you get to be so cool?".

Deadline, as usual, is next Thursday at noon EST.

Have a great weekend!

New interview and WordWatch 2007

Heidi Ruby Miller sent me her famous Pick 6 interview, in which authors choose six out of fifteen questions to answer. I managed to squeeze into the end of the year, so go check it out.

You might remember that last year I embarked on the Quarter-Million-Word March. And failed, mostly because I wasn't in the middle of any first-draft projects. This year I passed that mark somewhere around Thanksgiving (woo-hoo!), and have nearly reached my goal of writing three hundred thousand words in one calendar year.

I have 18,856 words left, so with five days, that means 3,771 words/day. Definitely a challenge, but not an insurmountable one, considering I'm in the middle of the first draft of the second vampire book (if you can call 15% finished "in the middle").

Each day I'll post my current count. If I make 300K, what should be my reward?

Writer Unboxed Interview

Therese Walsh from the gorgeous and fascinating writing blog Writer Unboxed approached me late last year about doing an interview. After three months of my obsessing over every word, this was the result. I hope it's half as entertaining and fascinating as those of the phenomenal authors who have gone before me.

If you look closely, you'll see some breaking news that I haven't gotten around to mentioning on this blog yet, seeing as I already had one YAY-ME! post this week, and more than that makes me want to strangle myself.

Parts 2 and 3 of the interview will be posted next Friday and the Friday after that.

If you're coming here for the first time after reading the WU interview, then welcome! And you can skip this post, since it'll make you feel like you're in a hall of mirrors. (Here's a post about an interview that brought you to this post, which tells you about the interview.)

Podcast Interview

This week's Balticon Podcast features an interview with yours truly. I discuss the concepts and ideas behind Eyes of Crow, as well as the sordid history of Requiem for the Devil. I mostly fail to embarrass myself. Whew!

This is one of the best-produced podcasts I've ever heard. They gave the show a joint theme of "strong, independent women" and "crows," which they even incorporated in the introduction.

Other features of this episode:
  • J.R. Blackwell's Rules for Talking to Girls at SF Conventions*
  • a really cool song called "Scared" by Canadian singer-songwriter Allison Crowe
You don't need an iPod to listen to a podcast. I repeat,

you don't need an iPod to listen to a podcast

Just click on "Download This Episode," and the .mp3 file will load and play on any computer.

Thanks to host Paul Fischer for doing the interview and for putting together such a great show.

Enjoy!
