Don't vote

I pledge to do my civic duty this election season, not by proselytizing on who you should vote for (Seriously, is anyone still undecided at this point? What are you waiting for, a neon sign from God?).

No, I'll do my duty by being a big fat noodge every day until the last state passes its voter registration deadline. I'll list the states every day (except today, because it's still open everywhere) whose registration is still open and highlighting those whose deadline comes the following day.

This will require meticulous record-keeping on my part, not to mention creativity to come up with new ways to bug the pants off you about registering to vote. I hope you appreciate my sacrifice, and show that appreciation by purchasing my upcoming novel The Reawakened, which is chock full of hot political issues like torture, military occupations, and pyrokinetics (setting stuff on fire with one's mind is the big sleeper wedge issue of '08--just wait and see).

Don't worry--it won't be painful. It'll be video-riffic, starting with today's entry, "Five Friends (Uncensored)." Enjoy!

Fast Forward TV interview

Back in May I was privileged to be interviewed by Mike Zipser of Fast Forward TV, a monthly half-hour TV series on science fiction and fantasy. It was on the air the in DC area during July, but thanks to the internet, you can view it at your leisure (like, now, for instance!).

It was a huge pleasure to do the interview. Mike was a fantastic host who asked fun questions (which I didn't have access to ahead of time), and it was over before I knew it.

Like that podcast with Jon Armstrong, I haven't watched this yet. I find it too nerve-wracking. So let me know how it is, and whether I should wear my hair back next time.

*dies happy*

Guess which book Charlaine Harris just mentioned in this week's Book & Blog post?

Just when I think the vampire genre must be exhausted, just when I think if I read another clone I’ll quit writing vampires myself, I read a book that refreshed my flagging interest. Jeri Smith-Ready’s WICKED GAME was consistently surprising and original.

For those of you outside the genre, Harris is the bestselling author of the wonderful Southern Vampire series (most recently From Dead to Worse), which is being turned into an HBO series called True Blood, written by Six Feet Under's Alan Ball and starring Anna Paquin, beginning this fall.

Needless to say, I'm weak-kneed with thrill-dom.

Don't forget, you have until Friday to comment on Nancy Haddock's interview and get a chance to win a signed copy of La Vida Vampire!

Back to work now...travels are over...time to hermit.

A world without writers

Let's not forget: all the special effects and pretty faces and--gasp!--marketing efforts would be nothing without words on a page.

Find out more about how you as a fan of film and television can help the striking writers at Fans for the WGA.

A Man Named Munch

Actor/comedian Richard Belzer, who played Detective John Munch on Homicide: Life on the Streets and now plays a pale reflection of him on the vastly less brilliant Law & Order: SVU, has signed a deal to write two mystery novels inspired by his experiences on these shows.

The first novel, I Am Not a Cop, will be published in Fall 2008 by Simon & Schuster (yay--stable mate!). So I'm saving my pennies for BookExpo America next year in LA, because they'll undoubtedly have him there to promote his book. Maybe I'll even get an S&S badge. Maybe he'll nod at me.

Hustle is back!

Anyone who knows me knows that I don't watch much TV that doesn't come in the form of a flat disc in a red Netflix envelope, or 300-pound guys slamming each other into the astroturf. I even somehow lost track of Battlestar Galactica this season, though I adore the show.

But tonight at 10PM on AMC (American Movie Classics), the BBC hit show Hustle returns for its fourth season, and I'll be there.

Hustle is about a group of British con artists (except for Robert Vaughn, who plays an American) who pull off the most mind-boggling, audacious scams--but always on people who deserve it, of course. The show is delightful and intelligent and--heck, just watch it. Though it has story threads that weave throughout the seasons, each episode stands alone.

Ciara, the heroine of my vampire books, is a former con artist (only not so much former), so I started watching Hustle last year for "research purposes." Because I'm pretty much a Puritan who won't do anything fun unless it's also work-related.

Luckily my work is writing novels, not calculating actuarial tables.
